[ the book was her first mistake.
actually, her first mistake was attempting to out-track a tracker, particularly one with a strong sense of smell as sharp as his. so her second mistake was knocking his book down and alerting him that Not All Is Right in the room at that moment. it takes only a second for his sense to go on alert after he'd turned back around to discover the mess, and another second longer to catch her scent and spot her.
their eyes meet over the top of the recliner, and his expression flattens.
quickly, habitually, his hands gesture in the air. he stops about midway, realizing, and finally grinds out: ]

[ joke's on you, itachi and sakura — nic's known for over two minutes now, but he's a rudeass like that. the knocking is pretty funny to him, though, but mostly because he assumes they both remember he's actually very deaf.

[ nic's eyes don't fall down to his hands when itachi's do, but there is a visible stiffening in his spine once he realizes the other man couldn't be fooled. of course he isn't too surprised that such a detail wouldn't escape his notice. part of the reason he'd put the other man on hinata-and-kino watch in the first place had been due to his skills. ]

[ his eyes linger over the hand she's got around that sketch, the way the fingers twitch over the paper and hold it a little closer to her body than necessary.
after a moment, he looks back up at her, expression blank. ]
